What Is Technology?
Silly question, isn't it? At this point in our lives, technology is everywhere. We tend to think of technology only in the cutting edge sense of the word (AI! Driverless Cars! Blockchain!), but in reality, technology has served humans for almost our entire existence. Technology is merely the tool we create to solve an issue or fill a gap, and these days with technology moving to the invisible level, nano and virtual worlds included, it's essential to put technology in context.
Learning About Technology
The United States was once the biggest producer of innovative technology, but as the world gets smaller, influences from developing nations and up and coming economic powerhouses such as China are more important than ever. Technology is a universal issue and solution together. We just need to know how to implement it. New technology has the potential to solve our most pressing problems and rearrange the way we conduct the very smallest level of our lives. It always has. With the rise of artificial intelligence, human beings stand on the edge of a new revolution, making it more critical than ever to understand how technology has shaped our development.
Technology Courses and Certifications
EdX has considerable options for learning about technology. Students can learn about neural networks, the technology that gave us things like Siri, Alexa, and streaming services, or the next generation of Uber and Lyft (driverless cars). Students can learn at the intersection of computer science and linguistics to find out how artificial intelligence is changing many of the traditional business roles for the better. Classes also highlight ethics concerns and moral questions about our use of technology. Examples include the recent scandal with Cambridge Analytica and now housing discrimination concerns through targeted Facebook ads. Other issues include issues in the world of video games, but also the power of augmented reality in the world of education. EdX also offers courses that outline best practices for developing and launching new technology pursuits. Courses span a range of fields and disciplines, covering just about any pressing topic in technology you could find.
Careers in Technology
You don't have to live in San Francisco or New York to be part of technological revolutions. Social media is changing the way we interact with each other, making technological innovations possible across the globe and opening up collaboration opportunities that may not have been present before. American and Chinese companies are in a race for market shares in cutting edge tech, but newer economies such as South Korea or India stand poised to make their own breakthroughs. Whether you're in Silicon Valley or the most remote spot on earth, you could be the next creator of a technology that changes our lives.
